Which milk should I use for my child?

Milk usually contains a minimum of 3.2% fat and this can be removed to make reduced fat milk (1.5–2.4% fat) or low fat milk (less than 1.5% fat).

  • Children younger than two years of age require full fat milk and fresh dairy foods to ensure healthy growth and development.
  • Reduced fat milk may be used for children aged two years or older and in cooking or food preparation for all children.
  • Low fat milk may be used for school children aged five years and older.

Is Vitasoy soy milk suitable for children?
  • If used to replace cow's milk for children, Calci-Plus is suitable in the UHT or fresh variety.
  • Vitasoy soy milk low fat varieties are not recommended for pre-school children, 5 yrs and under.
  • 250mL flavoured Vitasoy Calci-Plus UHT packs are available for school lunches or for kids on the move - flavours include chocolate and vanilla.

Is there anything added to PURA milk?

There is nothing added to our PURA White Milk products. If there is anything added it would have to be stated in the ingredients declaration. There are no additives, preservatives or sugar added.

Question: Why is sugar listed in the Nutritional Information Panel if sugar is not added?

Answer: An amount of sugar is naturally occurring in milk. It is in the form of lactose.

Is your milk homogenised and pasteurised?

All our milk products are both homogenised and pasteurised.

Homogenisation is a process that distributes the milk fat evenly through the product and stops cream rising to the top.

Pasteurisation is the process of heating liquid foods to kill enzyme and microbial activity. It is a much gentler process than boiling. In this way, the nutrients and flavour are not destroyed by the process.

What live cultures are used in your yogurts?

To be legally called a yogurt, it must have a minimum of 1 million micro organisms per gram (special friendly bacteria called starter cultures). This is prescribed by the Food Standards Code. This amount should also be present until the end of shelf life (best before date).

Downlaod a list of the cultures in National Foods’ yogurts here.

How much caffeine is in National Foods' flavoured milk products?

What is caffeine?

Caffeine occurs naturally in a variety of plants and in food or drink made from various plants. These include the seeds of coffee and cocoa, tea leaves and the kola nut used in cola drinks.

As coffee and the cocoa in chocolate are ingredients in flavoured milks, these may also contain caffeine. Cocoa contains only a small amount of caffeine, but also contains theobromine, which has similar effects to caffeine.

Should I limit my caffeine intake?

A moderate intake of caffeine is considered to be 250-300 milligrams per day (equivalent to 2-4 cups of filtered or instant coffee) and appears to be well tolerated by most people. Some people may be sensitive to smaller amounts of caffeine.

The effects of caffeine are greater in children and can last longer due to their smaller size.

All flavoured milks made by National Foods contain 65 milligrams or less of caffeine per 250mL serve, which is less than 1 cup of coffee.

Although there is no direct evidence of harm, if you are pregnant or breast feeding your baby, moderation is the best advice. It is important for everyone to drink a variety of fluids.

Caffeine and calcium in flavoured milks

There is some evidence that large intakes of caffeine may have a negative effect on bone density due to greater loss of calcium from the body.

However, when consuming adequate calcium, there is no evidence that a moderate intake of caffeine reduces bone density (mass). Flavoured milk is a good source of calcium.

Freezing a product such as milk and cream will change the consistency of the product during thawing.

I can't find a product at my local supermarket. Why do they only stock certain products or flavours?

National Foods products are made available for distribution to all stores and supermarkets to purchase. However, we do not have control over which products supermarkets or stores choose to stock.

We would suggest that you either speak to the Dairy Manager of the store, or approach the service counter and request that the particular products is ordered in for you.

Should you have any other questions regarding stockists of our products, please contact our Consumer Enquiry Centre on 1800 677 852.
